Poverty-stricken petrol station worker finds £28,000 cash in car - then does something amazing

Penniless Akram Mahyoub could have changed his life with the money he found - but instead waited to return it to its rightful owner

An impoverished petrol station worker found £28,000 in a car he was cleaning - then waited patiently for the owner to return so he could hand it back.

Akram Mahyoub was asked to valet the car while its owner, a Saudi national, was away shopping in the capital of Riyadh.

Inside he found 150,000 Saudi Riyal - more than £27,800.

The money would have been enough to change the impoverished Akram's life, giving him enough money to leave Saudi Arabia and never return.

But instead he stayed and returned every penny to the owner on his return.

The petrol station owner filmed the moment the wealthy car owner thanked Akram, from Yemen, for his honesty, with the pile of cash sat on top of the bonnet.

The manager later told Arabic newspaper Ajel: "He found the sum in the car. He waited for its owner to come back and gave him the money.

“The owner was surprised by the worker’s honesty. He told the pump manager that another expatriate worker could have immediately fled the country with the money.”

It is unclear whether Akram received a reward for his selflessness.
