David Moyes has been appointed as the new manager of West Ham United.
The Scot returns for his second spell in the Hammers hotseat, signing an 18-month contract, following Manuel Pellegrini’s sacking on Saturday.
Moyes initially took charge of West Ham in November 2017 on a short-term deal until the end of the season after the sacking of
Slaven Bilic.
The team were in the relegation zone at the time of his appointment and he steered them clear of danger to a 13th place finish.
He was not offered an extension to his contract, however, and was replaced by Pellegrini at the end of the 2017/18 season.
Now he has been drafted back in after his successor failed to improve the club’s fortunes despite being backed heavily in the transfer market.
Moyes said: “It’s fabulous to be back. It feels great to be home. I’ve missed being here because I really enjoyed it. I enjoyed being around the stadium and I loved being in this part of the world and I missed the club, so I can’t wait to get started.
“I’m feeling very proud that I’m back here at West Ham. But I think more importantly I’ll be looking to see what I can do and what I can make improvements to, how we can get some wins with the players and how we can get some quick wins on the field as well.
“I do believe that the squad of players I’ve got here is a better squad of players than when I took over before, so I am looking forward to working with them.
“I think there’s got to be a short-term goal for us just now to get the wins to get us away from the wrong end of the league and what we’re going to do over the next six months, then what we’re going to do over the next period as well. The start is really focusing on the immediate games.”
Pellegrini spent £170million during his time in charge but, following a tenth place finish in his debut season, West Ham’s form has nosedived this term and they find themselves in serious danger of relegation.
Saturday’s 2-1 defeat to Leicester at the London Stadium has left the club 17th in the Premier League table, just a point clear of the drop zone.
And the club’s board members have decided to once again entrust Moyes with the reigns in their hour of need.
Moyes will have little time to prepare his players with a mammoth home game against fellow relegation strugglers AFC Bournemouth on New Year’s Day.
Confidence is low at the moment to say the least, with the club picking up just seven points at home this season – the lowest in the Premier League.
